Simon Gerrans out of Tour de France
June 24th 2009 07:32
Absolutely shocking decision by the Cervelo Test Team today to drop Simon Gerrans for this year’s Tour De France starting on July 4th.
Gerrans was recruited to Cervelo after the demise of the Credit Agricole team mainly on the back of an impressive 2008 that included a mountain stage win in the Tour de France (Stage 15 - Embrun to Prato Nevos) last year.
The new team signed Gerrans to assist Spaniard Carlos Sastre and his bid for back to back yellow jerseys. What makes this decision even more puzzling is the fact that ‘Gerro’ was in great form during the lead up.
After finishing a career best 6th in the Liege-Bastogne-Liege spring classic, he managed to get in an early breakaway during stage 12 of the Giro d’Italia and go on to register an impressive solo victory. Surely this warrants selection for the new outfit?
Maybe Gerro was getting too close with Lance and Levi during Tour preparation in Aspen?
Very disappointing…
